The first course at Tihar was held in late November 1993, the largest prison in the country housing about 9000 prisoners. After the success of this initial course, numerous courses were held in Tihar jail and eventually the technique of Vipassana meditation was adopted as a prison reform measure. Presently, it houses a permanent Vipassana Center in its premises. Many studies have been conducted on the impact of Vipassana meditation on prisoners.

This book contains research conducted by Kishore Chandiramani, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, New Delhi, S. K. Verma, Additional Professor of Clinical Psychology, Post-graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh All India Institute of Medical Sciences and P. L. Dhar, Professor & Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT, Delhi, on two studies carried out using standardized psychological tests. The dimensions of studies were well-being, hostility, hope, helplessness, personality, psychopath-like behaviour, anxiety, depression and attitude to law.

This book is intended as a companion volume to the book ‘Effect of Vipassana Meditation on Quality of Life’ and is ideal for Vipassana meditators as well as non-meditators.
