Mr. S. N. Goenka was a multi-faceted personality. Hailing from a staunch Hindu business family, he was a successful entrepreneur in his early years with a keen interest in social reforms, the freedom of India, politics and Hindi literature. At the age of 31, he was drawn to Vipassana and became its ardent practitioner. He is a beacon of hope to many and his transformation from a businessman to a principal teacher of Vipassana meditation is awe-inspiring. . VRI has published his autobiography in two parts to motivate people by providing an ideal example of how a householder can practice Vipassana and live a happy and peaceful life.

In the first part, Mr. Goenka has candidly portrayed his life before he came in contact with Vipassana meditation. He has expressed his profound love for India and how, due to misconceptions, he used to blame the teachings of the Buddha, especially "Ahimsa Paramo Dharma" (non-violence is the ultimate duty) for the downfall of India. In addition, this book contains his opinion on Hindu philosophy and mythology, caste system and its social fibre. It also provide glimpses of people and incidents which left a deep impact on his life, the part played by him in the sixth Buddhist council, circumstances that led him to attend his first Vipassana course and the positive changes in him thereafter.

This book is ideal for Vipassana meditators as well as non-meditators.
