The priceless teachings of the Buddha are preserved in Tipitaka, an extensive, detailed, systematic and analytical record. The Tipitaka (which means, literally, "three baskets") is arranged in three divisions: Vinaya Pitaka, Sutta Pitaka, and Abhidhamma Pitaka.

Sutta Piṭaka is a collection of discourses on various subjects which is apt for a householder. It is divided into five separate collections known as 'nikāya'. Aṅguttara Nikāya forms part of the Sutta Pitaka and is a collection of short discourses, divided into 11 divisions (nipatas) according to its numerical content.

This book contains translation of Aṅguttara Nikāya till the first three divisions (nipatas). Many famous suttas like ‘Kesamutti Sutta’, which is considered as Buddha’s charter for freedom of independent thinking for each individual, ‘Hatthaka Sutta’, ‘Uposatha sutta’, ‘Sugandhi Sutta’, ‘Venāgapura Sutta’ and ‘Mahācora Sutta’, which on provides guidance ideal governance of a kingdom, which is relevant even today, are enshrined in the first three divisions.
