The doors of Vipassana meditation opened to prisons, when the then Home Secretary of Rajasthan, Mr. Ram Singh, joined a Vipassana course in Jaipur. After experiencing the benefits of the technique, he resolved “This must be tried with criminals!” Accordingly, the first Vipassana course for prisoners was arranged in 1975 at Jaipur Central Jail, the first such experiment in the modern Indian penal history.

After the success of this first course, subsequent courses were conducted in different prisons in India. At present, Vipassana meditation courses are being successfully offered in the prisons around the world.

This book contains historical overview of Vipassana in prisons, anecdotes of the first Vipassana course in the Jaipur jail, experiences of inmates and impact on the course participants. This book also contains an inspirational story of how two prisoners sentenced for death penalty were benefitted by Vipassana.

This book is ideal for Vipassana meditators as well as non-meditators.
